This article will walk you through the steps to set up notifications for Zoom Team Chat (ZTC) on various types of devices.
Prerequisites
- Zoom Account
- This does not have to be a JCU Zoom for Education account
Setting Up Notifications on Windows & macOS
To ensure you receive all Zoom Team Chat notifications on your machine, you need to check settings in both the Zoom desktop client and the operating system settings.
Configure Zoom Desktop Client Settings
- Sign in to the Zoom desktop client.
- Click your profile picture, then click Settings.
- Select the Notifications & sounds tab to view chat notification settings.
- Under Desktop Notifications or Send desktop notifications for:, make your selections:
- Toggle on New chat messages.
- Choose your message preference:
- All messages: Get a notification for all message activity in your chats.
- Direct messages, mentions, and replies only: Only get notified for one-on-one chats, when someone @mentions you, or replies to a message you sent.
- Further down, you can exclude specific group chats or channels
Check Windows System Settings
- Open Windows Settings > System > Notifications.
- Ensure the toggle for Zoom is set to ON under the list of apps.
- Verify that options like Show banners and Play a sound when a notification arrives are enabled for the Zoom app.
- If you do not see notifications, check your Zoom presence status (your profile picture). If set to Do Not Disturb, you will not receive pop-up notifications.
Check macOS System Settings
- Open System Settings > Notifications.
- Scroll down and select the Zoom application.
- Ensure Allow Notifications is toggled ON.
- Set your alert style to Banners (which disappear automatically) or Alerts (which remain on screen until dismissed).
- Verify that Play sound for notification and Show in Notification Center are enabled.
- If you are not receiving notifications, check your macOS Focus settings to ensure Zoom is not being silenced.
Setting Up Notifications on iOS (iPhone) & Android
To ensure you receive all Zoom Team Chat notifications on your device, you need to check settings in both the Zoom App and the operating system settings.
Configure Zoom Mobile App Settings
- Sign in to the Zoom mobile app.
- Tap your Profile Picture in the top-left corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Notifications & sounds
- Under Notify Me About These Messages, select your preference:
- All messages
- Only private messages and mentions
- Off
- Under When to Notify Me of Messages, select:
- Always, even if I am active on desktop: You will receive notifications on your phone regardless of your desktop activity.
- Only when I am not active on desktop: Notifications are suppressed on the phone while you are actively using the desktop client.
Check iOS System Settings
- Open the Settings app on your device.
- Scroll down and tap Notifications.
- Locate and tap the Zoom app in the list.
- Ensure Allow Notifications is toggled ON.
- Under Alerts, enable Lock Screen, Notification Center, and/or Banners.
- Ensure Sounds and Badge App Icon are also enabled.
- Check your device's Focus settings to make sure notifications for Zoom are not being temporarily disabled.
Check Android System Settings
- Open the Settings app on your device.
- Navigate to Apps or Applications > Zoom.
- Tap Notifications.
- Ensure the main toggle for notifications is ON.
- You may see multiple categories (e.g., Chat, Mentions, Group Chats). Turn all relevant notification categories ON.
- To set the importance or behavior for each category, tap the category
- In the new screen, you can set additional notification settings for each type.
Lock Screen Previews: For privacy, you may also need to check your Android's Lock Screen settings to ensure notifications and previews are allowed to display when the device is locked.
