What is 3D Printing?

3D printers use different filaments to build a physical model from a virtual 3D model on your computer. A virtual model can be created using Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software, or other 3D modeling software. A large number of free 3D models can also be found from many 3D printing websites. The printing process can take anywhere from less than an hour to more than a full day, depending on the size and complexity of the model.

How can I use the CDM's 3D printing service?

Plan your model
- Decide what you want to create (keychain, logo, figurine, etc)
  - Simpler and smaller designs are easier to print successfully
Find a 3D print file based on your model's needs
- Research websites including but not limited to Thingiverse, Printables and MakerWorld and select a premade model that suits your project's needs
- Download the file in .STL format
- if you prefer to create your 3D model from scratch, you're more than welcome to do so
Submit your 3D printing file to the CDM
1. Students and faculty interested in using the 3D printer service are encouraged to submit print jobs by opening a ticket or emailing cdm@jcu.edu
2. In your ticket or email, include your name, the course your model is for, your .STL file, as well as a deadline for your print job
3. The CDM will notify you, via a PackCity notification email, when your 3D model is ready for pick-up
  - Your model will be in the yellow lockers right outside the CDM lab, which is rm. B112 in Grasselli Library

Who is eligible to use it?

All JCU students, faculty and staff can utilize the Center for Digital Media's 3D printing service for no cost.

Restrictions:

Must be for academic purposes
Any print jobs over 12 hours will require purchasing your own filament
Print jobs must be submitted to the CDM at least one week prior to your deadline
