How to Change Your Name, Personal Pronouns, and Gender Identification

The University adopted a Name Usage Policy in May 2021 to govern how our JCU community members can designate their preferred name and personal pronouns for use across our University systems.  In general, preferred names will be used unless legal names are required.  See the Name Usage Policy for details.

Professional Name (preferred last name)

Some people prefer to use a different last name than their legal last name. This is most common among people who changed their legal last name after marriage and would like to continue using their unmarried last name. Currently, employees can set a Professional Name by making a request to Human Resources.

Legal Name Changes

If you have legally changed your name, first name and/or last name, the request to change legal name in the University Administrative System must be made in person at the appropriate office. For students, please contact the Office of the Registrar. For employees, please contact Human Resources.
