How to Use Google Gemini and NotebookLM in Canvas

This article goes over how to utilize Google Gemini and NotebookLM in Canvas.

Prerequisites 

  • Must be a JCU faculty teaching a course.
  • Must have access to a JCU Canvas and Google Workspace account.
  • Must have gems/notebooks created before posting them in Canvas.
  • Must have Google Gemini enabled in the navigation menu of your Canvas account
    • There is no NotebookLM tab in the navigation menu, but you must have Google Gemini in order to add notebooks from NotebookLM into courses.

Google Gemini:

Navigation Menu Tab

  1. Go to your corresponding course and click on Google Gemini in the navigation menu toward the left side of your screen.
  2. Under Manage Gems, click on Add to Course.
  3. Choose the gems you want to add, then click the blue Add to course option.
    • You can also create a new gem directly from Canvas by clicking on Create new.

Modules

  1. Go to your corresponding course and click on Modules in the navigation menu toward the left side of your screen.
  2. Click on the particular module you want to add a gem in and then the plus icon in the top right corner.
  3. Click on External Tool from the drop down menu, then Google Gemini.
  4. If prompted, log into your Google Workspace account with your JCU credentials and authorize access.
  5. Select the gems you want to share and make sure to check the Load in a new tab box if prompted.
  6. Click on Add Item at the bottom.

Assignments

  1. Go to your corresponding course and click on Assignments in the navigation menu toward the left side of your screen.
  2. Click on the blue + Assignment button in the upper right corner.
  3. Click on the plug icon above the text box, View All and then Google Gemini
  4. Sign into your Google Workspace account with your JCU credentials if prompted.
  5. Click on Select Gem and choose the particular material you want to upload. 
  6. The material will be embedded as a functional LTI link for your students to access.

NotebookLM:

Navigation Menu Tab

  1. Go to your corresponding course and click on Google Gemini in the navigation menu toward the left side of your screen.
  2. Under Manage notebooks, click on Add to Course.
  3. Choose the notebooks you want to add, then click the blue Add to course option.
    • You can also create a new notebook directly from Canvas by clicking on Create new.

Modules

  1. Go to your corresponding course and click on Modules in the navigation menu toward the left side of your screen.
  2. Click on the particular module you want to add a notebook in and then the plus icon in the top right corner. 
  3. Click on External Tool from the drop down menu, then Google Gemini
  4. If prompted, log into your Google Workspace account with your JCU credentials and authorize access.
  5. Select the notebooks you want to share and make sure to check the Load in a new tab box if prompted.
  6. Click on Add Item at the bottom.

Assignments

  1. Go to your corresponding course and click on Assignments in the navigation menu toward the left side of your screen.
  2. Click on the blue + Assignment button in the upper right hand corner.
  3. Click on the plug icon above the text bok, View All and then Google Gemini.
