Freeing up space on H: Drive (Disk Full Errors)

Symptoms:

• You are receiving pop ups about "Disk Full" errors.
• Files downloaded from the web fail to download.
• There's a red bar when looking at "This PC" in File Explorer

What Files Should Be Deleted?

• Files that are in your H: drive count toward your quota. The H: drive includes your Desktop, Downloads, Documents, Pictures, and Videos folders.
• To access your H: drive open the File Explorer app, then expand or click into the This PC section, then choose the folder that says H: and has your username name.
  
• The first folder to check for unneeded files is the Downloads folder. Video files take up a lot of room, so if you have files in your Videos folder deleting or moving them to Google Drive will also help.
• You can sort the contents of your folders by clicking on the title of the column. If you click on the Size column for example it will sort your files largest to smallest and make it easier to free up space.
  
   

WinDirStat (This is for ITS Staff Only):

• It lists folder and file structure as blocks representing how much Disk space they are taking up.
• This tool is useful for visualizing what is taking up the most space on your drive and prioritizing what to delete.
• It is not recommended to use this program with shared network drives like the H: drive or O: drive.
• Clicking on a block allows for you to see the folder and location of the file.
• From there, you can choose to delete or keep the file.

How To Delete Files

1. Files can be deleted from desktop, downloads, documents, and pictures in your H: Drive by selecting them (or highlighting multiple at once) then clicking on the giant RED X at the top that says "delete".

   
   1. Start with the downloads folder
2. Clear your trash/recycling bin 
   1. Right click mouse
   2. Select Empty Recycle Bin
3. To select multiple files at once single-click and hold your mouse button down and drag over the files you would like to delete

How To Store Files In Google Drive

Website Version

1. Open or create a new folder in Google Drive

   
2. Select multiple or a single file from File Explorer
3. Drag it/them over to the Google Drive window and drop them where it says "Drop files here"
4. Or right-click in the area that says "Drop files here" and select "File Upload". 

5. To select multiple files at once, single-click hold your mouse button down, and drag over the files you would like to delete.

   

Desktop Version

1. Select multiple or a single file from file explorer
2. Copy them (Right click mouse, choose 'Copy' or ctrl C)
3. 

   Go to G:\ Drive -- My Drive or Shared Drives

4. Open or Create a new folder (Open New Folder)

   

5. Paste them (Right click mouse, choose 'Paste' or ctrl V)
