Prerequisites
- JCU Microsoft account
- Enrollment in a Canvas course using MyEducator
This Article Covers:
The basics of how to use the MyEducator add-in in Excel as well as troubleshooting a few common errors
Important Notes
- Due to JCU policy, accessing the Microsoft add-in Store will be blocked, even on personal devices. This prevents you from losing access to any paid add-ins for Microsoft Office after you leave the university. This can cause a few issues with using the MyEducator Add-in on personal devices.
- To circumvent this issue, we recommend accessing MyEducator through the JCU Digital Portal. Instructions on how to access or install the portal can be found in the article linked to the right.
- Microsoft Access is only supported on Windows machines and will not work on a Mac device. To access MS Access on a Mac, you will need to use the JCU Digital Portal.

- Download the Excel workbook file from the Canvas course
- Go to your Downloads folder
- Select the Excel/Access workbook file
- Right-click and select Properties

- Press Start.
Troubleshooting errors
Add-Ins Store blocked:
- Due to JCU Policy, the Add-ins store is blocked for ALL JCU accounts. There is no way to enable this so we would recommend using the JCU Digital Portal which will have MyEducator Add-ins pre-installed.
MyEducator not showing on Ribbon:
- Select Insert on the Ribbon
- Under Add-ins section press the small drop down menu under My Add-Ins
- Select Manage Other Add-ins
- Select MyEducator from the list and hit enable.
Unable to submit Assignment:
There multiple different errors that could cause this, We would recommend visiting this website1 and selecting the Run time error that matches the number that it displays when you try to submit the assignment.
- Typically this occurs when the device loses access to the Internet. Save the assignment and ensure you are connected to the Internet before trying to submit again.
MyEducator File Quarantined/Blocked by anti-virus:
- Open Windows Defender Settings
- Click on Virus and threat protection
- Click on Virus and threat protection settings
- Turn off Real-time protection
- Download the MyEducator Assignment
- Turn on Real-time Protection
Trusted Location (Windows Only)
If the method above for enabling macros does not work you may need to set up a Trust Location in Office first. A trusted location is a user defined folder where Office will not block macros. ITS recommends that you create a folder for your class in your Documents folder. It should not be your Downloads folder.
- Open Excel (or Access).
- Go to File > Options
- Select Trust Center on the left, then click the Trust Center Settings button.
- Select Trusted Locations on the left.
- If you are using a JCU computer checkmark the Allow Trusted Locations on my network option.
- Click Add new location then click Browse.
- Navigate to the folder you want to store your MyEducator files in, then click OK. Then click OK again to finish adding the location.
- You should now see your folder listed underneath the User Locations section

System Language Must be English
In order for the MyEducator macros to open correctly the system language of your computer must be set to English. Note that changing only the language for MS Office does not work.
Windows
- Open the Settings app.
- Select Time & Language.
- Select the Language tab on the left.
- Under Preferred languages click Add a language.
- Search for and select English (United States) and click Next.
- Make sure both Install language pack and Set as my Windows display language are checkmarked, then click install.
- There will be a progress bar as the language pack is downloaded. Once it's finished you will need to restart your computer for the change to take affect.
MacOS
See Apple's KB Article4 for instructions. Select English (US) from the list of languages, and choose the Use English option when prompted for your primary language.
