How to Print, Release & Scan Using 1 Tap Printing

Learn how to submit, release, and scan documents using 1 Tap Printing at John Carroll University, including setup steps, printing from any device, and troubleshooting tips.

Prerequisites:

  • You must be connected to the JCU network (e.g., via Eduroam or campus wired).
  • You must have valid JCU credentials and an active printing balance/quota.
  • Ensure your device is compatible (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android).
  • The StudentPrinting queue has been installed via 1 Tap Printing (Mobility Print)

Procedure

Submitting a Print Job

On Windows / macOS:

  1. Open the document you want to print (Word, PDF, etc.).
  2. Choose Print (Ctrl+P / ⌘+P).
  3. In the printer selector, choose the StudentPrinting queue.
  4. Adjust print settings (e.g., pages, color, duplex).
  5. Click Print / Submit.
  6. The job will be held in the queue until you release it at a printer.

On iOS / Android:

  1. Open the document (or photo) via Files, email, or relevant app.
  2. Choose Share → Print (or “Send to Printer” if the app supports it).
  3. Select the StudentPrinting queue.
  4. Adjust settings.
  5. Submit — job enters the queue.

Releasing a Print Job at the Printer

  1. Walk up to one of the public printers
    • See the Student Printing (Papercut) article on the right for the list of public printers
  2. Tap your Carroll Card on the attached carded reader to sign in
  3. On HP printers, your jobs will immediately print
  4. On Xerox printers:
    1. Tap the Print Release app if it doesn't automatically launchUploaded Image (Thumbnail)
    2. Select the job(s) you want to print, then confirm Release / Print.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  5. Collect your document(s).
  6. If you change your mind, you can cancel/delete jobs before releasing them.
    • Jobs are held for 24 hours before being auto-deleted.

Scanning Using the MFP Device

Some JCU printers also support scanning. To scan:

  1. Go to a scan-enabled printer (Multi-Function Printer, MFP) and tap your card.
  2. On its touch screen, choose Scan or Scan to Email / Folder / USB.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  3. If prompted, authenticate with your JCU credentials.
  4. Choose the destination (your email, Google Drive, or USB).
  5. Select file format (PDF, JPG) and scan settings (resolution, color / B&W).
  6. Press Start / Scan.
  7. Retrieve the scanned file from your destination.

Copying Using the MFP Device

Certain MFP devices will also allow copying. To copy:

  1. Go to a copy-enabled printer (Multi-Function Printer, MFP) and tap your card.
  2. On its touch screen, choose Access Device.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  3. Select Copy

  4. Press Start.
  5. Retrieve your copies.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Name print jobs meaningfully (e.g., “Smith-Essay”) so you can easily find them.
  • Duplex printing is defaulted to save paper, uncheck duplex or double-sided to select single-sided printing.
  • If printing to a color printer but you don't need color, select grayscale.
  • Check your printing balance/quota periodically.
  • Always release or cancel unneeded print jobs to avoid waste.
  • If print release fails, retry or cancel and resubmit.
